How Laser Therapy Helps Relieve Pain

Laser therapy is an effective way to treat pain. Many people that receive laser therapy find that it relieves their pain symptoms. Read on to learn more about laser therapy, what it is, and how it works.

What is Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a quick, effective treatment for pain. A laser, in basic terms, is a concentrated beam of light.

Laser therapy is often used to treat conditions like back pain, lower back pain, inflammation, fibromyalgia, arthritis, neck and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and neck and shoulder pina, among others. Laser therapy works through a process called photobiomodulation, or PBM.

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

Laser therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for pain. Studies show that laser therapy is successful at treating pain. Laser therapy works through photobiomodulation.

Photobiomodulation is a process where a focused light ray is used to interact with parts of the cells in the tissue, causing an increase in cellular metabolism. Increasing cellular metabolism leads to a decrease in pain and inflammation.

Cold Lasers vs Hot Lasers

Cold lasers are also known as Class II and Class III lasers. These lasers are called cold lasers because they do not feel hot during treatment. Cold lasers are most often used to promote healing and reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation.

This type of treatment is often called “Low-Level Laser Therapy” or LLLT. Cold lasers aren’t as strong as hot lasers. This means that the treatment is less effective, but also a lower risk than hot laser treatment.

Hot lasers are also known as Class IV lasers. Hot laser treatment is often referred to as “High-Intensity Laser Treatment” or HILT. These lasers feel warm during treatment and are often used as a quick and effective method for managing pain and for muscle relaxation. Hot lasers are stronger than cold lasers and are therefore more effective at treating pain. They also come with a bit more risk. Both methods are considered very safe and non-invasive methods for treating pain.

How long Does it Take for Laser Therapy to Work?

Laser therapy is known as a quick and easy pain management treatment, but how long does it take to work? Some patients may feel the effects after just 1 treatment; most patients will feel the effects after 2 to 4 sessions.

It is recommended to receive at least 2 laser therapy treatments every week for pain management. The effects of treatment are cumulative, so patients will feel better the more treatments they get.

What are the Risks of Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy treatments are a simple and fast way to treat pain. Sessions are usually quick, easy, and even enjoyable. Patients often either feel nothing or feel a warm sensation.

However, there are some downsides. Some risks associated with laser therapy are burns, scarring, bleeding, and skin discoloration. Lasers are very precise instruments, and laser therapy is safer and less invasive than other kinds of treatments.
